Use traditional metalsmithing techniques and sculptural metal clay components to create a multi-dimensional bi-metal statement necklace that will surely become your next show-stopper. This two-day, in-depth, technique-driven workshop will have metalsmiths begging for more metal clay and metal clay enthusiasts wanting to explore new possibilities in fabrication. You’ll join master instructor and goldsmith Julie Sanford as she shares tips and tricks using traditional metal fabrication and metal clay components together, taking your skills and imagination to a whole new level.
 
You’ll be introduced to the properties of metal clay and its history as you design and create a dramatic necklace around a focal stone. Techniques in mold making, metal clay casting, wet and dry clay finishing, clay firing, gold overlay, layout and design, custom prong fabrication, multi-step soldering, stone setting, chain making and professional finishing will all be covered in this comprehensive metal workshop. Students will be able to explore creative new design possibilities and discover ways to use the combined techniques of metal clay and metal fabrication to develop their personal style and influence their current body of work.
 
Students should bring small found objects to mold (sticks, leaves, shells etc.) and a focal stone (flat back up to 2.5 inch or 65mm--I'll have a selection for sale if you don't have one)
 
Personal tools to bring; craft mat or cutting mat, small spray bottle, exacto blade and/or pin tool, small clay sculpting tools if you have them, nail file for dry clay, metal files, Flush Cut Wire Cutters, Bench Block, Goldsmithing Hammer (or similar), Round Nose Pliers, Flat Nose Pliers, Needle Nose Pliers, Safety Glasses, Tape Measure, Fine Brass Brush, Writing Materials, Personal Hand Towel, Eye Magnification if you need it (reading glasses or Optivisor)

A kit fee of $225 will be collected by the instructor during the workshop and includes 30g metal clay, mold compound, sterling wire in various sizes, sterling jump rings, shared use of 22k gold embellishment and shared use of studio consumables (solder, flux etc.).
 
This workshop is part of the Metal Clay Artists Symposium and requires the purchase of the General Registration.
