This workshop meets Friday and Saturday, August 25 & 26, 2023, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm each day with a lunch break

Lustrous Raku-fired porcelain beads decorated with silver metal clay will make a big fashion statement. First used in 16th century Japan to make simple wares for the tea ceremony, today's Western style Raku emphasizes intense metallic colors and lusters for jewelry. These colors are produced by taking the hot wares from the kiln, plunging them into a container of combustibles, and allowing them to smoke. You will learn to make your own porcelain paper clay for strong lightweight beads and use it tom make hollow form, molded and hand formed beads. After glazing, we will explore several methods for embellishing the beads with silver metal clay for even more lustrous effects. The beads will be fired using an ingenious smokeless firing technique adapted for firing small jewelry pieces.

Students should bring: 15 grams fine silver metal clay, Art Clay Overlay Paste, fine silver syringe.

A kit fee of $25 will be collected by the instructor during the workshop to help cover cost of glazes, porcelain, misc. supplies. Students will supply their own metal clay.

This workshop is part of the Metal Clay Artists Symposium and requires the purchase of the General Registration.
